Animal Rights vs Animal Welfare
Animal Rights
- More concerned with destroying the livelihoods of the people who hunt, farm, and do research rather than actually investing on improving the well-being of animals.
- Promote a Disney view of animals
- Resist improvements in animal welfare because it does not help them achieve their aims. Bigger pens and larger cages do not help them accomplish their ultimate goal of “animal liberation”. They are more concerned about the hypothetical animals in a hypothetical future than they are with real animals today. In a more sinister way, better treatment for animals makes it hard for them to raise money. They want animals to remain in horrid conditions because it gives them ammunition for their campaigns.
- Violent, vitriolic, and vengeful.
- Will attempt to intimidate and harass.
- Target children with their propaganda.
- Will not negotiate or ever be satisfied with anything done in an attempt to appease them. Regardless of whether it is better for the animals, it’s their way or the highway.
- Dominated by charismatic leaders who wow their followers with double talk, a feeling of belonging, and some good old mud-slinging.
- Attempt to instill a feeling of heroism amongst their members. People naturally desire to feel special and crave attention, by making them feel like heroes the AR groups are creating a new breed of radicals.
- Fascist tendencies.
- Always looking for money. Web pages contain more donate buttons than verifiable facts.
- Will lie and make up false facts to win their argument or to sell their ideas to the public. Sensationalism sells.
- Believe they are more moral and “evolved” than others
- Anti-rural, anti-primary producer with no understanding of where there own food actually comes form. For example, they oppose farming livestock, but love organic food. The link between animal manure and not using chemical fertilizer never occurs to them.
- Recruit uninformed celebraties and indoctrinate them with their propaganda to promote their fund raising efforts. For example: Paris “puppy mill” Hilton, Pamela “I had no idea sheepskin boots were made from a sheep’s skin” Anderson and Paul McCartney’s seal adventure in PEI when they thought they were in Newfoundland. For McCartney’s picture with the seal pup, his crew were constantly employed at keeping the mother seal at bay. Despite warnings and reliable information they cuddled and touched the seal pup which tried to bite them, an doomed the seal pup to death since the mother will not feed an infant that smells like humans.
- Opposed to all types of animal research, including the efforts to cure AID’s and cancer. This also includes opposition to current medical products such as insulin which millions of people require in order to live.
- Examples of animal rights groups:
- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
- The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)
- The Humane Society International (HSI)
- The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
- The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS)
- Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty (SHAC)
Animal Welfare
- Promote the humane and sustainable harvest of animals.
- Are opposed to any unnecessary animal suffering.
- Support the protection of animal habitats.
- People are naturally animal welfare supporters.
- The food and fur industries as well as hunters are supporters of animal welfare. These groups want to ensure harvesting is done in a sustainable and a humaine manner and want to preserve a healthy population since without it there would be no opportunity for future business. There is no profit to being inhumane or cruel to animals as it leads to poor quality products. The false atrocities that animal rights groups would have you believe are true would actually be counter-productive to business.
- Examples of animal welfare groups:
- The World Wildlife Fund
- Ducks Unlimited
- Save the Rhino International
