Ellen anti-seal hunt and anti-Newfoundland?
Ellen DeGeneres, daytime talk show host and former sitcom star decided to speak out against the seal hunt recently. On both her show and website she has made a plea for fans and viewers to speak out against the hunt and to donate to groups such as the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Groups that we here are animal wrongs know are not really concerned for the welfare and well-being of animals, but about making controversy and raising enormous sums of money.
Ellen came out and said “Seal hunting is one of the most atrocious and inhumane acts against animals allowed by any government. Canada is allowing the slaughter of a record number of seals in their 2011 hunting season, which is going on right now. The seals are often younger than 3 months old.” DeGeneres then continued, “This has to stop. To my friends and fans in Canada: please help put a stop to this.”
Although Ellen clearly has a love for animals, a subject which she devotes large portions of her show to discussing, we here at animal wrongs can’t help but wonder if Ellen also has some sort of dislike towards Newfoundlanders? On her 90′s sitcom show, one episode featured a character who trying to make a career at stand-up comedy in Canada made several jokes about Newfoundlanders, including coming straight out and saying “It’s so true. Those Newfies are so stupid…”.
First she calls them stupid, then she attacks one of their traditions and industries. We’d like to know what you readers think.

CANADIAN BROADCAST STANDARDS COUNCIL – Complaint on Newfoundland insulting Episode

I am so sick of these half-assed “Hollywood types” ranting and raving about the cruely of the seal hunt. They just go around spewing the misinformed facts that these “so-called” animal rights groups spread around. If you’re going to talk about something, you should know as much about it as you can. The sad part is, these false “facts” are so widespread and pervasive that the actual truth of the matter is drowned out.
They (PETA, the other groups) only attack the seal hunt every year because it brings in HUGE amounts of money for them.
I wonder why these celebrities that call themselves animal lovers aren’t speaking out about puppy mills, and the condition that millions of domestic animals are found in every day. Oh, wait…it’s only cool to piss on someone’s culture and ways of life, just so that you’re one of the “in crowd”.
I AM a Newfoundlander, and I DO support the seal hunt, and I’m damn proud of it.
I find it quite funny how all these celebrities are calling out us Newfoundlanders for the seal hunt. The seal hunt is no different then fishing or killing animals for burgers at McDonald’s. Celebrities need to learn the full facts before they try to turn the majority of the world against us for doing something natural. We do not even club seals anymore, we humainly kill seals as you Americans kill cows for hamburgers, and at least we use every single part of the seal and put it to good use. There are millions of seals and if a certain number of them aren’t killed each year then the seal population will sky rocket and they will eat themselves to starvation. We don’t even kill the baby seals because it is illegal. I hate how they show pictures of us inhumainly killing the seals when we do not even do that anymore. So for the celebrity that is going to bash us, come to Newfoundland and watch the seal hunt take place for one day and you will see how wrong you are. Ellen, you’ve just lost a huge fan because of how wrong you are about the seal hunt, Congratulations.
Helen, Helen, Helen. I thought you were a human!! You are no different then the rest of Hollywood. You talk for money!!! You fool! Wake up my dear and speak for yourself. You are not condemmed or judged for your sexual desires but yet you judge people for their need to supply themselves with food. Use your brain my dear and not someone elses who has written a load of crap on the sealing harvest which we Newfoundlanders are PROUD of.Come visit me. I personally will take you to the flows and you can see for yourself what happens there. After we will go to the killing floors of the slaughter houses. We can then debate the humamity of the harvests and compare the two. K??

In other words, you’re a psychopath. Congrats.

You’re right. Killing seals is bad, killing cows or any animal is also bad. Go vegan. Just like Ellen.
I an sure and others don’t realize is that the seals are over populated and stopping the cod stocks from rebuilding and the seal hunters are only trying to making money. And what about slauder houses we don’t hear about them why? because that takes place behind closed doors if seals where done in the same way we would not hear about it because it would be out of site out of mind. Newfoundlanders ARE NOT STUPID.
Ellen,
You need to go back a few decades regarding the seal hunt in Newfoundland.I grew up in a family of fishermen.Seals are overpopulated and played a large part in the decline of the salmon and cod fishery. My father (and proud of it ) was one of those men who travelled to the ice on sealing ships. It was done so he could earn money to feed his family.I am also proud to say he never killed a white coat and any seal he killed was with one clean shot. Also, seal was and still is part of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians diet. My father only took what we could consume and unlike many celebrities never wore seal skin coats. Therefore,I strongly support the seal hunt.Maybe,Ellen, you best look at the Japanese and their atrocities regarding the whales.
